Reflections from the Berlin Pipeline Technology Conference
Hear our commercial lead, Sarah Brooks’ key takeaways from this year’s Berlin Pipeline Technology Conference.
Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Berlin Pipeline Technology Conference. This experience was not just an opportunity to immerse myself in the world of pipelines but also a chance to learn from some of the brightest minds in engineering, regulation, and tech innovation. Entering the pipeline sector as somewhat of a novice, the conference served as my crash course.
The generosity of experts willing to share their knowledge made my educational journey both enriching and immensely rewarding. Here are some insights and takeaways from my time at the conference.
A Familiar Landscape
One of my initial observations was the striking resemblance between the pipeline sector and the water sector. Both are marked by their emphasis on safety, risk management, and the crucial need for collaboration among operators, regulators, investors, and service providers. They share challenges like ageing infrastructure and an eagerness for technological advancements to foster knowledge exchange and mitigate risks.
The Future is Tech-Driven
A significant focus area of the conference was the optimisation of pipeline infrastructure and asset operation through trusted analytics, machine learning, and AI. Discussions led by Cliff Anderson of PRCI on partnerships and collaboration highlighted the importance of nimble SMEs in contributing vital pieces of the industry puzzle. It underscored the value of trade associations in facilitating these indispensable partnerships.
The Road Ahead: Innovation and Growth
The imperative for innovation and long-term growth resonated deeply with me. Achieving this, especially in light of the forthcoming EU Energy Efficiency Directive by 2030 and the European Green Deal by 2050, demands trusted partnerships. Engaging conversations about harnessing innovative solutions in Hydrogen and CCUS for energy transition left me hopeful about the future.
The Inspiring Women of the Conference
A standout aspect of the conference was meeting numerous incredible women whose energy and drive were palpable. From those early in their careers to seasoned professionals, the spirit of knowledge sharing and support was truly inspiring. I eagerly anticipate our next gatherings.
The Joy of Collaboration
The conference reaffirmed how the people we meet and work with can significantly enrich our professional lives. Collaborating with experts who not only understand engineering but also how technology can drive benefits and make a long-term impact, is indeed a privilege.
The Berlin Pipeline Technology Conference was an enlightening experience that offered a glimpse into the future of the pipeline sector—a future that is collaborative, technologically advanced, and driven by a community of passionate professionals. Here's to more learning, innovation, and growth in this vibrant sector.
